This required us to search for the druids we had previously scared off and to retrieve a stolen magical gem than would help the land to flourish, thus making the growing of luscious grape vines possible once more. Last week we headed back to the Wizards of Wines winery to help vintner Davian Martokoff restore his winery to business after the aforementioned druid infestation. As well as that, we saved a winery from evil druids had our fortunes read by the mysterious Madame Eva and have generally upset a lot of people. We have also helped install a new town leader in neighboring Vallaki, before accidentally burning most of the town to the ground. Since arriving in Barovia, our group has managed to survive two encounters with Strahd, as well as many battles against wolves, ghosts, scarecrows, hags, and angry townsfolk. The players begin by finding themselves transported via strange mists to an unknown land they cannot escape from, and are then dogged and marked for sport by evil vampire overlord Strahd Von Zarovich. ‘Curse of Strahd’ is Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition’s version of a classic gothic horror campaign set in and around the infamous Castle Ravenloft in the province of Barovia. The session lasted the usual two hours and suffered some technical hitches, but it still delivered an epic battle that we all really enjoyed, and that managed to include a few surprises for us all. Last night my Dungeons & Dragons group played the 24th session in our ongoing ‘Curse of Strahd’ campaign, and we spent the whole time fighting a giant, evil, animated tree. The rogue crawled over the young mage and spread himself, forming a protective shield, as the giant tree creature lifted its enormous trunk-like left leg and began stomping towards them. But they were shocked to see Kosef dive down first. Wanna know what other monsters are on my Hotlist? Or, maybe instead of the deadliest you want monsters that provide interesting challenges in and out of combat? Check out my Blocklist.Baräsh and Engong both readied themselves to dash down the hill after their fallen comrade. The town is safe for now, but for how long? What’s Next? Something spawned the monstrosity, and this evil and will continue to spread in the forest. After they defeat it, they have a tough choice. It’ll keep your players out of the woods until they’re ready for the challenge.Īnother fun option would be to have one of these creatures smash its way into a town the party is staying in. Alternatively, you can set it up as a guardian, and only allow it to move as far as the edge of the forest. Drop it on your players early as a way to add tension as they traverse the woods. The monster is indistinguishable from a dead tree when it is stationary, making it a great inclusion in your adventure’s trip through the woods. I love this monster for its strength in combat, but it’s a great option for a campaign as well. With the bite, this stacks up to a grand total of 69 damage per round. With a grappled target, the blight can make its bite attack as a bonus action. ![]() ![]() Two of the attacks are made with their roots, grapple the target on a hit. ![]() Smaller blights are fun in combat, but the Tree versions bring things to a whole new level they attack four times with their multiattack. They spawn minions, hateful blights that hunt animals for food. These evil plants may be born whenever a tree is infected with a malevolent mind. In D&D lore, this tree is born when a stake, driven into the heart of a vampire, sprouts into a tree. ![]() The tree blight, like any other blight, is the spawn of a gulthias tree. A brand-new favorite monster! So, what make this blight so good? I got the chance to run the Tree Blight from Curse of Strahd, and it easily made the hotlist on its first match. You like D&D, so you’re good at imagining, right? This is an awakened tree, not a tree blight, so just imagine this with a frown. ![]()
